Faceoff: Canon C300 vs the RED Scarlet

  • HDMI and HDSDI out (unconfirmed if you can get actual 4k resolution, word on street is that files are downscaled to 1080p)
  • Hot shoe mounted monitor w/ 2 XLR ins
  • 1920 x 1080 resolution
  • Also is able to record out of SDI
  • Unmatched low-light performance (apparently)
  • Availability: Jan. 2012; Price: appx. $16,000 USD

RED Scarlet

  • 4k resolution
  • 4k 24 fps, 3k 48fps, 2k 60fps, and 1k 120 fps!
  • 13.5 stops of exposure, 18 stops with HDRx
  • 14 megapixel sensor
  • EF canon mount with PL mount optional
  • REDMAG (SSD) media
  • 35mm sensor
  • HDMI and HD-SDI output
  • Availability: shipping PL mount version November 17th, Canon mount version ships December 1st

Jim JannardĀ  announced today that “The world has moved past small sensors and low resolution.”

The tech specs speak for itself. Every single tech spec about the Scarlet exceeds the one on the C300. It’s not just a victory but a one-hit KO.Who ever thought we would ever see the day that RED ships earlier than Canon and cheaper?!!?

Canon might have a trick up their sleeve though. The new EOS camera announced appears to be the little brother of this new camera, if it comes with RAW video and/or clean HDMI out then maybe the tables will turn again.
