Paul Thomas Anderson is a highly underrated director. He’s one of the few directors out there that gets critical raves for every project.
Today the first teaser for the long awaited ’The Master” has been released. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is in almost all of Paul Thomas’s films but has never gotten the lead until now. Also Joaquin Phoenix is coming out of ‘retirement’ from his rapping career and from the looks of this teaser, he’s might be picking up that little Oscar.
It’s obvious from the trailer that it was shot on film which gives it a wonderful aesthetic but what may not be obvious is the rare choice to shoot the film on 65mm rather than 35mm. Now this is not IMAX but close. (IMAX is 70mm)
Lawrence of Arabia and 2001: A Space Odyssey are notable examples of a film shot using the Super Panavision but the last time a film was shot entirely on 65 or 70mm is Hamlet (1996)
This year we have two 70/65mm films coming out… The Master and Samsara. (Samsara is sort of a sequel/follow up of Barka)
The reason why 65mm/70mm is so rarely used is because the workflow required with these huge reels will push any budget exponentially.
‘The Master’ is set to be released October 12 2012
