Tutorial: How to get beautiful slow mo with optical flow in fcp X

I’m a fan and hater of FCP X. I tried to quit but the color correction and slow mo interference keeps me coming back so I’ve revised my workflow to edit in Premiere CS 5.5 and then do color grading and slow mo in FCP X but it’s annoying to cut every clip back up. Hopefully with this new app I can start using FCP 7 to edit/organize and then export straight into X.

Anyhow here’s a quick tutorial… but first the keys you should learn:

B- blade tool, lets you cut clips

A- makes the blade go back to the normal mouse so you can click on stuff

command+R- shows the retime bar above the clip so you can drag it to make the clip slower or faster

As seen in the above video all you do is click on the clip and go to Modify>Retime>Video Quality>Optical flow

Free tip: You will get best results with a flat background, ie- one color. Also don’t forget to shoot with the highest frame-rate and shutter speed you can. If using a gopro just set 120fps (gopro2) or 60fps (gopro1) and for DSLR 60fps plus the highest shutter speed that doesn’t under-expose the image.
